Dial-ins, honest or not
 

Just raced for the first time this year Wed night. With plans to put together a GM H-body this year that I am aquiring from my brother-in-law, I figured I would get out and make some laps in the meantime with my Civic driver. I have always dialed close to my average when racing and did that the other night. Got by first round by a red light gimme, but lost 2nd round. The other driver caught me before the stripe and let off,playing with me. So the question is; do you dial close to what you think you can run and drive it out without lifting. Or, do you dial slower, and have enough time to judge where you both are at the end but having to brake so as not to run under?

It's a simple question. Do you want to be the pedal-er or the pedal-ee ?

Fletch, Biondo, Zane, Cummings, Jackson, ect all hold a tenth or more...you decide

A lot of people like to hold, but it's really a matter of personal preference.

I have won a lot of rounds dialing honest, hammering the tree, and running the number. I also know a lot of guys that have won a lot of rounds holding a tenth and reeling people in.

It really is a matter of what you are comfortable with and what works for you.

Lee doesn't hold a tenth. Usually........ Has held a couple of tenths a few times. Once held 5 tenths and once won a final dialing up a second. That was an interesting one!

Thanks for all the comments so far. My one TT on Wed was a 18.17. So not knowing about what the car would run, I dialed at 18.10. 1st round was a 18.21 and 2nd round was 18.23. Running against the tuner crowd with their 13-16 sec Honda's/Acura's, I figured it would give me some experience with being chased. The V-6 Starfire ( GM H-body ) I am going to build will be in the lower classes, around T/SA, so I will be chased then most of the time ( unless they run mopeds,[:-laughing-:] ).

Very interesting topic. In the early days of bracket we would dial a little quicker than we could run and just run it out and won a lot of races that way. That was before reaction times were given at most tracks. I know most of the name racers are good on the big end. I seem to always have trouble with faster cars. I think if you are a much slower car you have to be dialed close, hit the tree and hope for the best. I just lost a close race Sunday to a .75 second faster car. It was double break out and I gave up the stripe and still broke out more on the brakes. Anyone come up with the perfect answer, I would like to know.
