Best gear for 8.5 10 bolt
I have a 8.5 10 bolt in my nova.. No one makes a "pro" gear for a 10 bolt so I have always ran the street gears.. I have been debating selling the current rear and buying a 12 bolt but that is a huge expense even after selling the 10 bolt..
Who makes the best gear for a 10 bolt? Is it worth getting the gear treated or polished? ( I think Jim bailey used to do this as a business)... Just really hate to swap out the current rear end.. |

I have moser axle and spool package in mine with motive gears. Motives are good for about 5 years in my car and it weighs around 3500 lbs with me in it.

Fleming ,
There are some people making PRO- gears for 8.5/10 bolts ... What gear do you need ??? |
Re: Best gear for 8.5 10 bolt
I have moser axles and spool in the car currently..
I am thinking 5.14 or 5.38 gear.. I just bracket race right now with 4.88.. if i fix a class motor it is a low hp 74 350 so I think a 5.14 with a 200 or turbo transmission with 2.75 low gear.. I may send it to innovators west and have gear lightened and treated if you guys think its worth the extra money.. I didnt know anyone made a pro gear so thats good news. |
Re: Best gear for 8.5 10 bolt
There's no reason in the world that that 8.5 10 bolt wouldn't hold up in that car with a stocker 350 and an automatic.I seem to remember guys running them with a posi unit, that was the weak point. If you had a good set up, a good spool, quality axles, maybe steel web caps, etc. you probably won't ever break it. I don't think I'd use one in a '70 Chevelle A/S car, but the small block I,J or K car would have no issues. That rear end is probably 80-90% the strength of a 12 bolt anyway. Some of the bearings in it are the same as the 12 bolt uses.I do remember a shop that used to get junkyard big-car 12 bolt housings, cut the axle tubes off, and attach the axle tubes from 10 bolt Camaro-Nova rear ends to it. He had the jig to line things up, he was an excellent welder, and he had a good product, but he's been gone out of business for some time.I think big car 12 bolts have gotten scarce around here as well.Good luck with your project!

Re: Best gear for 8.5 10 bolt
I've got a friend that has a pretty fast bracket car that has had really good luck with his 8.5" 10-bolt. The car, a '84 Hurst/Olds with a 455 Olds/Glide with a t-brake, runs 8.50's. The car is pretty light, under 2500 lbs., and he actually runs a street type gear.

Moser has an entire BOLT in REAR for under $2000.00
Just about as much as installing everything yourself... Dan |
Re: Best gear for 8.5 10 bolt
Yeh I think I am good as well now that I think about it.. Right now the car runs 6.90's 1.45 60'.. I make a class car out of it I prob wont run 7.30's in the 1/8 but I would think the 60' would still be down in that range with the 2.75 low gear..
I will probably send the axles to moser to get them star flanged and gun drilled this winter.. and switch the pinion yoke over to a 1350 u joint.. ( I dont trust the 8.5 strap setup) Thanks fellas! |
