Clutch sensor

My Jerico has a RPM sensor collar installed on the cluster shaft.
I bought a new sensor for my Sportsman Racepak and found the magnet in the existing collar had the incorrect polarity. drilled out the old magnet and as I went to install the new one, the magnet got sucked into the hole on the collar and is attached (magnetically ) to the cluster shaft.
The result is the magnet is recessed exactly .100" below the collar surface and the instructions call for a max clearance from magnet to sensor at .100". As it sits now, I have .015 clearance between the surface of the collar and the sensor tip. This provides a total of .115 from sensor to magnet.
Will the sensor still function with .115" clearance?
The cap screws on the collar were ground down , apparently for rotational clearance, so simply removing the collar is not feasible.....without destroying the collar and getting a new one( which is an option).

Any thoughts on this issue ??

Thanks in advance,

John

Just a thought, what about taking a drill bit and gluing it to the magnet with JB weld so that you can pull the magnet back out? If I understand the situation correctly the magnet is going to be riding against the shaft and nothing is holding it in place other than magnetism? Once the magnet is pulled out, JB weld it flush.

Re: Clutch sensor

Good idea, Sean. However, I got a little overzealous and peened the collar to hold the magnet in. I may be able clean up the opening and try your suggestion.
Thank you.

Re: Clutch sensor

Try taking the cluster out of the trans so you can drill out or ez out the bolts holding thecollar?

The old collar must be removed. Looking at a source ( Ruland) that makes a variety of sizes. Likely need to find one that is close ( ID and OD) and hone the ID or turn the OD to make it work. Needs to be 2.350 OD , 1.750 ID .

John,

It looks like Grainger and IBT has 1.75" ID in a 2 piece. But the OD is 2.75" But you need an OD of 2.38. The last one of the list is 1 5/8" ID and 2 3/8" OD. That might work if you can machine the ID to what you need.

Re: Clutch sensor

Thanks for your help Sean.
The Ruland line has an aluminum unit (SP-25-A) that is 2.375 OD (good) and 1.5625 ID that I can make work.
I got a few feelers out now to see if anyone has one already made up for this application. If I don't get lucky soon....I'll try the Ruland. The local Motion Industries store can get it for me in a few days....$18 for aluminum. Then I need to drill it for the magnets....get them from racepak...and hopefully be done with this project!!!!
PM me if you want to chat about this stick stuff. I'm on a learning curve and need all the help I can get!!

John
