Why destroy 93 Vipers?
There are other ways to handle this situation.

I got this from one of my friends that is a DP and Viper owner.
This is a sad deal.

It's not like years ago when the guys that worked for car company's were car guys. These DHs don't care 1 bit about the cars. All they care about is the bottom line. To them these cars are just like a box of cookie's it is only a product. So who care's what happen's to them. Sad what the world has become.

I'm a trainer for our Ford ASSET technician training apprenticeship program and deal with these issues all the time. We are grateful when we get free donated cars from the manufacturer to train with, it keeps our training programs up to date with current automotive technology.

Yes it's seems nuts to crush these beautiful cars, but since these prototypes vehicles have no titles /branded titles/or no assigned VIN there are clear stipulations from the manufacturer in their donation process that when those cars are donated to educational training institutions they can't:
Drive them on the street
Sell parts for profit
Try to license them
Race them

In the case of the Vipers, Because there are no titles on these donated vehicles to sever the liability from the manufacture /the manufacture is legally liable hence /crush them all. May not seem right, but in today's legal world it's a necessity and from a purely teaching standpoint the technology is outdated. But the Viper still is a always will be a beautiful and cool car.

My father was on the engineering team for the Chrysler Turbine car. Because it was a government collaboration when the program got canceled they ordered all of the cars to be destroyed. Fortunately a few got 'snuck-out' the back door.

Haven't the car companies given pre-production cars, "test mules", etc. to people to make into race cars only? Or have things gotten so sticky that they don't/can't do that anymore either?

Why couldn't they sell them to drag racers like the DP program. No titles no Vins no problem. Just plain silly.

could you go down and get a lost title and add a new vin given to you by the court house? Like when you build a car from scratch.

Prototypes are always "supposed" to be crushed, been that way for many years. Part of the issue with them is EPA compliance too.

I had the pleasure of chatting with some of the engineers on the GNX program. They were there driving GNX prototype #7. I asked them what was going to happen to the car when they were done with it and one of them winked at me and said it would be crushed. I always wondered which one of them ended up with it. It had 3200 miles on it and the rear tires were almost showing cords. :D

Rumor has it on the Mopar boards that one of the donated Vipers was involved in an on street accident, hence the order for all of them to be turned in and crushed. I do believe that their claim the car is worth "hundreds of thousands" is a bit of a stretch.

Even at $10 grand a piece it would have been nearly a million dollars
