San Antonio Raceway update
Major creditor has taken control of SAR only to find all the Track equipment/vehicles, concession equipment, tower and office equipment, shop equipment, lifts and timing equipment had been taken. That was of Wednesday of this week. Understand the "acquirers" have been identified and legal proceedings are in place.
I do hope that IHRA/NHRA/??? gets ahold of it and makes it a profitable venue again. At one time it was a very nice track and we use to test and run the bracket race often, it has not been that way for several years and has steadily gone down hill. Unless you ran a glide with a lite converter and a big tire, there was little or no "Hook". What a waste... RJ |
Re: San Antonio Raceway update
I heard the starting line got so bad that only Fords and International Trucks could run there.

Re: San Antonio Raceway update
Thanks for the info RJ. I haven't heard if Edinburg will follow suit. Sad to see old racetracks go down hill then disappear. The times they are a changin'.

We use to run on a small airstrip. They'd set up some lights, but no track prep whatsoever. The starting line got so bad, I'd put a floor jack, a couple of spare tires and a big tool box in the trunk to help with traction. Hey, it worked. I tied for 1st in points there one year and didn't go to all the races. This was a bracket track at the time. But I'd won some races there in Stock, back in '73-'74. They still used a flagman start back then. That was a trip. The slower car got so many feet head start, and had a better track surface to launch from. The track was marked off for the small spots. But for the really long spots, the flagman would ride on the fender of the slow car and tell him where to stop. It was just his estimate. I once had to run a Pinto. He was supposed to get a 410 foot spot. He was so far down track, I could barely see the flagman's signals. The Pinto had won so many races, there was a bounty for anybody who could beat him. There was no breakout, so I beat him to the line and picked up the bounty. I was doing about 100mph and he was probably doing maybe 50. So he probably felt the suction as I went by. :D |
Re: San Antonio Raceway update
This will be the second track to close in San Antonio since the '60's. Too bad!.
I wish they had built a drag strip in Austin when they built the new formula car track. JimR |
