notes about SBC 327 crankshaft, or if I had it to do over
Racers, after spending time with the Super 10 engine research I decided to build a 300/327 engine combo. I think that decision is good and fits well with the Super -10 GT super stock class.
I decided on a Dart SHP Pro block, again, I think a good decision. About the crankshaft, after considerable searching I found a suitable 327 factory shaft then sent it to Mile High for full work over. Again, very happy with the work and pricing from Mile High. The problem, main bearings. A few years ago a special thick bearing was on the market that adapted a 327 main to a 350 main [the Dart block is of course 350 main] The thick bearing can no longer be found. After more searching I did find spacer bearings but I did not like the fit. So, align hone the spacer bearings in the block to get the bore true. It is assembled with those honed to fit spacers and all is OK. Knowing what I know now, a new shaft with 350 mains and 327 small pins would have been a better choice and given more bearing selection options. So, maybe my experience might help another race who is considering a 327 build. |

A large journal 327 crank is lighter than a small journal crank.

Well that is interesting Dwight. How much weight are we talking about?

Both Jegs and Summit , among others, sell Clevite MS1110H Thick bearings, There is also MS1110H-1 available. Hope that helps for the future.

ss3011,
the spacer bearings are listed in a number of location on the web but when you call "those are no longer available" is the answer. Even though the web site says, "will ship from manufacture" Clevite no longer produces them nor King nor any other manufacture that I could find. |

Just got off the phone with Summit, they verified they have 4 sets of those bearings in stock ready for shipment.

I forgot to explain, the mains are .010" under , that is the problem with finding the thick bearings.

I don't remember exactly. A couple of pounds, I think.

I used a large journal crank in my 327 and the rods are turned down to small journal. I checked before and was surprised how much lighter the large journal cranks are.
