Nice article. I was in Orlando in 1999 and remember the fuel spill.

Very nice man, talked to him & Gary in Vegas a few weeks ago, two very classy gentlemen. I was at Mission that May (Four Days in May). The excitement and anticipation that morning was unlike anything I had ever experienced. When the scoreboard showed the numbers, everyone went wild. It was quite neat to have witnessed history in the making.

I don`t know if the timing of this article was deliberate or a coincidence, but I just looked at my still in the plastic "First in the 9`s" Bobby DeArmond T shirt, and tommorow (May 6th) marks the 14th anniversary of Bobbys historic run. I was fortunate to have been one of the witnesses to that run on that chilly May morning at Mission Raceway. Many of the top "A" cars were there, including Robert Pond (67 427 stick Fairlane), Don Little (70 Hemi Cuda), Joe Alouise all the way from the East Coast (63 Max Wedge Plymouth), and a few others as well. As mentioned, after the 9 second pass , the engine came out of the car, and torn down for a full NHRA inspection. Hard to believe its been 14 years already. I`m not positive if that was the same year that Bucky Hess and Ray Barton brought their East Coast MoPars to Mission for the "Hemi Shootout", but for a couple of years, the Mission divisional race was a must attend race for West Coast Stock & S/S fans.

Bobby and Gary are not just great racers, but also outstanding individuals, true ambassadors who represent the sport in the best manner possible. It's great to see them continue to get the recognition.

Both Bobby and Gary have been quick to offer advice over the years, not just to me but also to others I know as well.

Jimmy Bridges has a great story about Bobby. When Bobby's car broke at Orlando, Jimmy gave him some tie down straps to help secure the broken car in the trailer better, in order to prevent further damage on the trip home (Jimmy said he was not going to see that great car get beat up a bit further, when Bridges says you have a great car..). Bobby had Jimmy's tie downs back to him almost before Jimmy got back to his shop in Tennessee after the race. Says a lot about a man when he pays more than the straps cost new just to see that Jimmy got his spare straps back ASAP.
