66 Fairlane Wagon Combination Suggestions

Have a good friend who has the bug to build a stocker out of a 66 Fairlane Wagon and I need some guidance to pass along on what combination would be the most advantageous. I don't know anything about Fords and need some help.. What would you guys build and why if you were in his shoes?

Saw a 66 Fairlane wagon sell on Mecum Auctions yesterday for $66,000...

Anyway, there are three versions of the wagon as far as I can tell. Fairlane, Deluxe and Squire. All are similar but weight and trim might be a bit different. For class racing you need to match that.

The most competitive (on paper) wagon is the one with the 390/265hp engine. It has a factor of 13.52 to 13.59 depending on model and falls into L/S or L/SA. The range for that class is 13.50 to 13.99 so it sits on the top.

Go to the NHRA Stock Car Classification Guide for model weight info and find the Engine Blueprint Sheet on the same site for Ford 1966. Click NHRA Competition at the header of this site for the links.

Get ahold of Chris Whitney and see about the 427 4-speed combo as a '67. That wagon ran B/S and was stupid fast. Plus it looked like a blast to drive!

How does he turn a 66 into a 67? Flip it on CL?

1966 390/265 has a 2-bl carb and would not be competitive against the 4-bl cars in L class. Just because any car falls at the top of a class does not necessarily make it a good combo especially since weight can be adjusted today.

True. That leaves the 390/315 with a 4BBL. It's a natural 11.41 to 11.47 in G/S or /SA. Shipping weight is between 3641 and 3660 depending on model.

You can run a 427/425 in the 66 wagon in Stock. The factor is 9.04 or 8.91.

And a 427/415, too. 9.43 for that combo. Looks like this 427 runs Shelby or Edelbrock heads.

The 427/425 would be C or B stock and the 427/415 would be C stock, too.

This is from the Stock Car Guide, not Dwight's link.

The 390 4 barrel is the only way to go. Unless budget is not a factor.

That's for the smart Ford guys to figure out.
