Purchasing race car in Canada
I'm thinking of purchasing a car in Canada. I live in Massachusetts. Does anyone know if there is a duty tax/fee? What steps to take? Customs websites are confusing.

Re: Purchasing race car in Canada
I am originally from Canada and brought my race car down as well just recently purchased my next project from Canada. You will need a clear title (Provinces use the registration as the title). Also, you will need to contact the manufacturer to get a compliance letter. Canadian safety and emission rules have always been more strict so compliance should not be an issue, just a formality. You should be able to google search for the phone number. Assuming the car was made in US or Canada there are no duties and taxes are paid when you title it in your state, nothing to pay at the border. I always crossed as the Buffalo Peace Bridge and they are extremely helpful, you can call the US CBP office there and speak to a vehicle importation agent.
If the car doesn't have a clear title not sure you'd be able to bring it over, never tried. Hope this helps. Frank |
Re: Purchasing race car in Canada
I brought a project race car across to WA. and had to stop at customs, I needed the usual paperwork, signed dated bill of sale, title, I didn't have to pay duty, I believe you only pay duty going into Canada, this was my experience and of course your results may vary. Brian 627stk

Re: Purchasing race car in Canada
As was pointed out earlier, Canadian vehicles don't have titles, they have registrations. They DO NOT have Lien or Loan info on the title(registration). Canada Customs will not check liens for you, and U.S. Customs wouldn't care if the car had a lien(or liens) on it. You would need to know what provinces the car had been registered in since new, and check ALL of those provinces. A PITA I know, but a little trouble now is better than big trouble, i.e. $$$, later.
