header tubes smashed down
A couple of buddies were over the other night and talk got to headers and led to a video where they smashed all the tubes on a SB chev and on the dyno the before and after HP and torque were about the same. Another buddy said it was impossible so I'm putting it on here to see what you people think. Snakeoil or?

Re: header tubes smashed down
Wow!
Sure would like to hear what one or more of the header gurus think I'm running 20 yr old Jack Davis fenderwell headers and thought about looking into some custom stuff, but between AHFS and this video, I guess I'll stay with what I've got |
Re: header tubes smashed down
I bought Headers By Ed literature 20 years ago. They explained the exhaust gases flow like water in in stream. The fastest flow is in the center. It is slower on the outside of a header tube because the cold air outside the tube slows the flow along the metal wall.

Re: header tubes smashed down
I think that headers for the most part are too large anyway. You mentioned Headers by ED. The size he would suggest for primary tubes and collectors most would think it was a joke. But I have done nothing more than put a set of collector extensions on and picked more than two tenths. We in fact set the national record in M/S awhile back with his collectors. I really really wish that he still made headers. Not only did they work very well, his pipes were a work of art. All he sells now are header kits. I have used a number of these kits and they work well. But anyone who has built a set of headers, especially equal length, know they are a real pain. But everyone should try it once or twice.

Ed's Venturi Collectors have impressive results: http://www.headersbyed.com/hc_ventext.htm

Re: header tubes smashed down
Obviously, that header primary tube is quite on the large size. 15/8" headers work better than everybody thinks.

Re: header tubes smashed down
There literature changed the way I think about exhaust flow. Tube size is the start of scavenging. Heavy cars need small tubes. As mentioned above often times people put to big a header on
