73 Chevelle wagon

I have a chance to pick up a 73 Chevelle wagon completely stock 350/4bbl TH350. I am wondering if it is a good candidate for stock class racing. I think I am going to buy it either way, but I have always wanted to go stock racing and this semed like a good way to start. any Advice would be helpful and appreciated. Thanks

Joe

First, resist the temptation to buy first and figure out later. Check the NHRA site about S and SS class guide. Notice the 73 has a lower compression and head changes.I probably is a weak stock class car. If you dont want to be disappointed right up front attend a race and ask the owner of a stocker class car you like the looks of why they chose THAT model and body style. Its quite an education. Find a soft factored motor in a easy to work on body style.
Good Luck. It can be wonderful if you plan first. Dick

Re: 73 Chevelle wagon

We went through all the numbers a few months ago on this combo & I think the 1972 175 hp/350 engine got the better head & an optional higher lift cam. It also had some alt. choice about the pistons too. Sorry I didn't bother to look, just typing from memory. It seems like it did carry a little more weight, but the heads cam & compression made up for it.

Edit: I got to thinking about it & I couldn't resist looking it up
The 175 hp 1973 now (as of 7-07) carries 283 factored HP. The 1972 175 HP carries 270 factored HP.

Re: 73 Chevelle wagon

I started my 175/275 350 project last fall. I thought at the time this was a good combo. A couple of guys were going fast with it. This combo has been hit with HP twice since then and its now 175/283. Its not the end of the world but I will have to add 96 lbs. to my car. 73 Chevelle wagon would make a cool Stocker. Be prepared to get chased alot.
Good Luck,
Joe

Natural class for this car would be M or N/SA depending on body style. Indexes are 13.15 and 13.30.

I think the question is ..what are you looking to do? are you looking to run for the world champ.....to be a div. champ........or just run some "stock/class" races? the answer to this has alot to do with what combo to run.;)
