Winter project: 69 Camaro with SS hood in GT class

283 245HP dual 4's

Need to know distance (room) from head ports to hood (w/scoop)

Gonna try a custom small tunnel ram for the dual WCFB's, and I don't want to lower engine

Any help out there

Yes, I could measure but 500CI big block curently in the way and I'm kinda lazy

Just a shot but maybe measure with the BB in and add the difference between block heights? It would give you a rough estimate. You have to pull the BB eventually, so why not get it over with before Winter sets in? I'm cleaning up my sbf now so I don't have to suffer in the "shop" when it gets nasty.

Randall, motor plate or traditional frame mounts? I know this doesn't answer all of your question but it's something to take into consideration.

If using the traditional mounts, there are two common sizes. They vary not only in height but width.

If you're going to do the traditional mounts, Elston makes a great mount that allows you to position the engine exactly where you want it.

If you've decided that you are (for sure) going to do the project, just pull the BB out and do what the chassis builders do; install a dummy small block with heads and a "mock-up" of the intake you think you're going to use. Sounds like you intend to get carb-to-hood clearance by adjusting the height of the intake and/or carb spacers, because you don't want to lower the engine, and this technique would allow you to achieve that. Also, an interesting engine/chassis combination...

Just some added info: two potential buyers want to hear BBC run, it also has a fiberglass scooped hood, and I am acquiring the correct factory SS scooped hood; timing issues and logistics prompted me to inquire if anyone had the measurement I need.

I assume this could be from any SS SBC with single 4BBL with intake and carb spacers and how much gap left.

I will be using a motor plate

Randall… The idea sounds intriguing and the cowl hood (SS scooped hood you mentioned) would be favourable, obviously. Although, the advantage of the additional height may be impeded by the cowl air filter sealing ring flange. The centre to centre placement of the carburetors will need to be considered, to work with the stock sealing ring flange. With your combination, the carburetor bias will favour the firewall or rear of this flange. In 1969 you could order a Z/28 with dual Carburetors and Crossram intake, but the hood had a different style construction with hood sealing flange that worked specifically for that application. Randall, I haven't answered your question directly, but just didn't know if you were aware of this potential interfering factor. You did mention that you were "kind of lazy" and I didn't want you to construct something that might not work with some of the measurements you may receive. Hope this helps…Maurice.
