question about brakes

I have a 68 mustang that I bracket race and it has stock drum brakes all the way around. I am thinking about swapping over to disc brakes, looking at Wilwood and Strange.
I have heard different numbers so I'm wonder if i were to swap how much lighter are the disc how much weight can i expect to shed.

Re: question about brakes

My 68 Coup started out with drum/drum street brakes and I dumped them for Wilwood street disc/disc. Dropped around 45-50 pounds. Changed them for Strange S series drag brakes and lost about another 10. Early Mustang stocker brakes are a huge mess.

Strange brakes don't retract worth a crap.

Re: question about brakes

The brakes with the lowest drag in the market is TBM.
The car will roll easier when compared to other brands including Lamb and Mark Williams.

Re: question about brakes

The TMB brake co. sales a rotor hone tool . Any body tried it or you just cycling out rotors ? If your rotors pass run out test & other wise look good not discolored & still smooth when your replacing your brake pads do you do anything to your rotors [ bin on the car 5 yrs now ] ? .I run M/W on 4 now , it had drums on all 4, it was alot of weight cant remember the total amount , but from what the other guys posted seams about wright .

Re: question about brakes

I put a Wilwood custom made disc brake kit on the front of the '97 Firebird I had and it saved 40+ lbs and worked well with no issues.

It was basically a rear kit adapted to fit the front by a company in Pa.

I'm sure its still on that car more than 10 years after I had it.

It had drum rears and aluminum drums when I had it...

Re: question about brakes

I went with the strange front discs on my 68 mustang coupe bracket car. It took off about 42-44 lbs. The rears are 11" drums. The only 3 issues I had were 1) the cotter pin would not go through the spindle, 2) it moved the wheel out about 1/4", 3) the studs were a little short for the weld pro stars. I thinned the nut down on a lathe (about 1/32"- 1/16", don't exactly remember). You can't do anything about the movement of the wheel outward, but it didn't affect anything. The studs went all the way though the wheel, but it looked like it had too much depth on the lug nut. I bought a shorter head lug nut and it looked a little better. Also went with the strange master cylinder for disc/drum application. With the bias set more to the rears ( strange recommendation) the system works very well. Should have done it years ago, especially running at island drag way with the short shutdown. Also I can still hold the car on the starting line at 4500 on the convertor (5000) in real good air. Strange was very helpful with any questions I had ( and I had a bunch-lol).
Feel free to pm me if you have more questions as we are running the same body and I have been running mine since the 70's.
