GMPP 427 Crate Motor

Looking at one of these 427 BBC from the General for a 68 Chevelle street car. Has anyone had any experience with them? This car will not be raced at all. Thanks for any input and Merry Christmas to everyone.

GM Performance stuff is always good. You might question their choice of camshaft, or carburetor (because you personally like something else), but the stuff itself is ALWAYS top quality. Remember, they were the people who designed and developed the engine in the first place, so these "commemorative" engines (L88 & ZL) gave them a chance to correct the few flaws the originals had. The one you show looks to me like it would be a killer street engine, in a larger car like a Chevelle.

This engine will go in my 78 year old Dads car. This is an original 68 SS /396 and he wants to take the original engine out and put on a stand and do something different. He would build his own but finding a virgin core and then getting all the machine work done ,he thought this was just a good alternative and everything new and complete. Then the original engine will stay all intact.

I would call it an excellent plan. The GMPP engine will save hundreds of dollars and hours of fooling around, trying to gather original parts and having machine work done. You write a check, put the engine in the car, and literally hours later, you're having fun. Just my opinion, but absolutely the only way to go, for what your Dad wants to accomplish.

Using this engine would be a really smart move. I'm a couple of years younger than your father and can still do a lot of this work, but I'm getting really slow at it.

Could not do it for $11,500.

Purchased an L88 in the early eighties from GM for a boat we were working on. Decided to take it apart to check everything. Found an extra rod bolt in the pan along with the Detroit News. I think the date on the paper was pretty close to when they assembled the motor.

:D

And hope it makes the advertised HP.

I doubt any disappointment in that department. Chevrolet Performance goes through a pretty extensive process when they bring these crate motors to market.

I put one of those in a 68 camaro with TKO 5 speed made a good combo plenty of power for a stock car. Check on oil pan the one I put in had a truck oil pan, had to replace pan and oil pump out of the crate pickup welded to pump. When had the pan off seems like it had JE pistons, callie's crank with stock rods but this has been awhile memory not as good as use to be.
