Re: Is Sportsman Drag Racing Changing?
The PRO classes at the money bracket races seems viable to me.
I would rather run against SS cars but it is bottom bulb, dial in racing for large amounts of money - with no heads up. IMHO Ron |
Re: Is Sportsman Drag Racing Changing?
I liked this article John and wish I had a S/S legal car to run these events. I think it is cool for the sport to get new events going other than Div or Nat events. As a middle aged guy with limited time to race, the idea of spending a min 3 days to race for only 'one' race (like a div) is not inviting. 2 races in one weekend is interesting, for a big purse makes it more interesting. I think the local association STK/SS races are really cool too.
It seems like the 'turning point' you mention is different for different racers. More interest overall, or people moving from other classes to STK or S/S, or is it getting more young people in the class, or is it just the current STK/ SS racer getting more respect in the forms of bigger purses. IMHO, more STK/ SS races and events is a good thing. |
Re: Is Sportsman Drag Racing Changing?
This is big for stock and super stock racing. Look like the events will be well attended. I plan to be at the big race at SGMP right after the Gator. Thanks to all of the promoters that are stepping out there to put these events on.
The NHRA entry fees are high for the purse that we race for at both the national and divisional levels. the entry fee for a national is about the same as the big money races at SGMP. The purse is much less. At the National event some of our entry fee goes to pay the pro classes. The Nationals are much more of a carnival atmosphere now than they were years ago. Get out and support these big money races. If they are successful then there is a chance there will be more. Maybe Kyle and Peter will do one. |
Re: Is Sportsman Drag Racing Changing?
I like the concept. Better payout, BBQ etc are enticing, but until there is a way to police electronics and other forms of cheating, these races won't realize their full potential. A robust tech inspection would add legitimacy to these events.

Re: Is Sportsman Drag Racing Changing?
I would love to see class eliminations or heads-up shootouts like Top Stock at some of these races. The money is cool, but years after that is spent it is nice to have something shiny on the shelf or wall.....
