Re: Jeff Lee
I was under the impression that the carb on the 383 was too small to make it competive
|
Re: Jeff Lee
The carb is definately small. I believe the AVS is only 650 cfm. That is only one of the reasons I am asking around before I jump in the water. And I saw what Ed's small block chevy can do!
Ed- sent you a pm. thanks will |

Re: Jeff Lee
I investigated running the 340 combo as that is what is in the car now. But the heads I use (w2) are not legal. A noted head porter suggested I find a set of 576 heads to use if we build the 340. I put out a few wtb posts with no results. But was given access to a bunch of 383 blocks, heads, cranks, valve train parts to use. So I thought I better start asking the right people.

Thanks
I do have access to several sets of the 308's. I will follow up with that. |
Re: Jeff Lee
Years ago, there were two such cars that were both pretty successful in SS/IA with 383's, but they might have been later models with T-Quads (if the 383's ever had T-Quads).... dunno. One was the Dave Smith (ProTrans) car out of California, and the other was Dave Boertman's , who may have won a Championship with that car.... maybe not. I just remember reading that it was fast...
At any rate, both were VERY competitive, if my memory serves me correctly. But, I think they both ran mainly in SS/IA, not J. Dunno what that was all about; maybe the HP factors were different then, or maybe they just didn't like the idea of ballast, but they were tough... both of them. Hope this is accurate and that it helps some.. |
Re: Jeff Lee
If you want to have a fast 383 or 440 with the AVS, the man to talk to is Steve Wann. Dave and Greg Smith's car ran the later 1971 version of the 383 engine with the Holley Carb.
