what class to run in???
My sons and I have aquired a 65 mustang coupe (" PROJECT CAR") and would like some advice on which class would be the least expensive to build our project car for ? We have an IHRA track w/in 20 min. of us and we aren't too far from several other tracks in Texas. None of us have any real race experience , except for 75 years of combined love for Drag Racing. The Rookies!!

Re: what class to run in???
Building a crate motor car would be a fairly inexpensive way to start out.
Here are a few of the combo's you can run: Ford ? 302 / 215 @ 240 ? 302 / 270 @ 250 ? 302 / 285 @ 265 ? 302 / 320 @ 300 ? 351 / 362 @ 352 (2001 or earlier) ? 351 / 385 @ 375 (2001 or earlier) ? 392 / 430 @ 410 ? 460 / 486 ? 460 / 535 ? 514 / 600 @ 525 |
Re: what class to run in???
Your approach to class racing is backwards. First you need to decide what class you want to run, then pick a car that you feel will be competitive in the class. The best plan would be to buy Mark Yacavone's Mustang and start out with a winner!

Re: what class to run in???
go with the 302/215 crate motor that way if ya get sick of class racing or ya want to bracket race on the off weekend ya have a low maintance engine. Also if in a few years you want to run both NHRA & IHRA (crate motor is IHRA only) you have a good 302 for a start for a SS/GT car.
