New Edelbrock S/S Legal Cyl. Heads
After visiting their web site and checking out their 2008 new products brochure, I noticed Edelbrock is releasing NHRA S/S legal aluminum cylinder heads for Olds, Pontiac and Ford 427 FE. I wonder if these will be legal for just super stock, or stock too? If so, I imagine a horsepower 5-10 horsepower penalty will accompany their use.

Re: New Edelbrock S/S Legal Cyl. Heads
Stephen & Horace: You need to look at the Edelbrock web site. The Ford FE 427 #60087 head is new for 2008. It appears it is the same head as the #60089, but less port matching and bowl blending for NHRA legality. I'm an Olds guy, and I'm just wondering what's going to happen with NHRA Stock or Super Stock concerning the legality of the Olds head.

Re: New Edelbrock S/S Legal Cyl. Heads
After e-mailing Edelbrock, I learned that the Olds head will only be legal in Super Stock at this time. This is due to the fact that the head is sold with a rocker stud/guide plate arrangement rather than OEM pedestal mount, plus the fact that it's also aluminum rather than iron. I can count maybe one or two people running the 455 Olds combo in Super Stock.

Re: New Edelbrock S/S Legal Cyl. Heads
has anybody heard any thing from NHRA on this is it going to be for all the pontiacs or just the round port high performance heads as in the ram air 4 or H-O combos?

Re: New Edelbrock S/S Legal Cyl. Heads
Jeff: According to the flyer, the #60587 Pontiac head is identical to the existing #60589 except that it has not been port matched or had the bowls blended. According to the flyer, it may be only for Ram Air IV, but I would contact "Smitty" Smith at Edelbrock to be sure. I'm sure he would be more than happy to give you some more info.

Re: New Edelbrock S/S Legal Cyl. Heads
Jim,
Hope all is going well up north. I am curious as to where one finds out what replacement parts NHRA has approved. I was originally told that the OEM must contact NHRA and certify that they are listing the part as a replacement part. The only way to find out was contact NHRA.Then I was told replacement parts are placed on the Engine Build sheet. If the E head is approved as a replacement for the RA IV combo in stock for 2008 this will change the direction I might go with the two engines I am building.I have seen some try the head with little sucess or I should say below expected returns on stocker type engines. But racing Pontiacs for all these years they worked well on a all out bracket engine for me and I have my own ideas how they might work on a low lift type set up on a stocker and would love to try based on acceptance and HP rating. Thanks Don |

The Batten aluminum head is legal for the 455 Olds in SS.
