Use the mig welder. It's easier to work with.

Can't beat the TIG for versatility and clean welds, IF you can operate it.

MIG is okay for most stuff, spot welds on body panels and such, but keep in mind that all Chromoly must be TIG welded, plus the TIG is nice for small fabrications out of Aluminum or steel.
Being able to control the heat better is the big advantage of TIG welding.

I assume you are looking to purchase a welder and take care of some simple stuff on your own?

Takes a little practice to get the TIG program going, anyone that can stick weld can learn to MIG decent in a matter of minutes to hours.....I don't like the flux core wire, always use the appropriate shield gas for what you're doing.

Re: Welding- Mig Or Tig

like mentioned tig is the most controlled of welding and with some practice great results can be achieved
if you a planning a roll bar install and chrome is your choice of material, tig is a must but practice is a must bench welding is one thing ,getting to all of the seams of your roll bar that it is in your car "not easy"
alot of planning a head will make this easy

a mild steel bar can be mig welded inplace and also can produce great results with practice

if purchasing a welder and the tig is of choice, make sure you get a machine that has a water cooled nozzle ,this way when you tackle some aluminun projects the tungsten will not over heat and melt in to your welding project

with any kind of welding preping your work is key for the best results gmonde

Re: Welding- Mig Or Tig

For body panels I have been using tig with Silicon Bronze. Its seems to be more of a braze than actual weld but it works. Works great for filling all the small holes from Clecos, firewall attachments and others up to 3/8" without any metal plug. I just put a quarter on a 68 Cuda and I used mig, not tig, silicon bronze and it went ok. A little more practice and my feeling is it will be the best way for sheet metal.

tig is the better deal if you can handle it. on body panels the welds are much easier to grind.
