I have a silver plated serving tray that I bought at an antique auction that is inscribed:"1971 NHRA Grand Nationals Pro Stock Eliminator Valvoline Award".What is it & who won it? Wild guess,Sox or McCandless.We know it was Canada but that's all. Thanks!

Ronnie Sox winner Don Carlton r/up....I looked it up on the NHRA website. I was at Sanair in maybe 1970 racing in Stock at the Division race....

Thanks guys, this was bought in N.C. We are die hard Sox fans,and 1971 was a stellar year for the S&M team. I had Sox autograph my original 1964 Super Stock magazine( Comet on the cover) I must say that Sox was always very nice and easy to talk to. The old school guys had character,that is why they are held in such high regard to this day. We all love racing and have heroes, my sportsman hero is Mike Boyles.I also have to admit that Charlie Wisecarver can drive a four speed better than most people can walk. The Wisecarver Brothers are simply awesome. My dad is my greatest hero although we dont get to do much racing. This will change as soon as I finish college. Who are your heroes and why? By the way, did I mention that I miss those old Modified Vettes?

Pro Stock heroes.......Ronnie Sox was very professional and a great driver. TheSox and Martin team was the first professional looking race team I recall ever seeing and he never made a miscue out on the racetrack. Lee Shepard was a better driver. Very quiet relaxed and always looked laid back with a pair of shades. In the car he was as good as anyone period. Butch Leal was also a super driver and was very popular with everyone. But the best of them all was Bob Glidden by a wide margin for a lot of reasons to me anyway...

I'd have to say it is a hard call to make when you say someone was a better driver in those days in P/S over Ronnie Sox. As far as cars go back then there is no doubt Bill "BILLY the KID" Stepp had the nicest cars. I believe he was also the first to have a coil over rear suspension in a P/S car. I think 72 or 73??? Paul Frost was the guy behind Bills cars in the day. Even when he tried to make a comeback in the 90's his two cars then were works of art!

71 was a good year for Ronnie but not a good year for my dad. His car was involved in a towing accident not of his doing that totaled the car he wont the US Nationals in along with his Truck. They took Ronnie's 70 car and made it into a 71 and my dad drove it. In 1970 my dad drove for Billy Stopp in Modified at the Winternationals and got RU. They took the car to Gainesville the following month and Won. This was a 1968 cuda in AMP. Those days racing was fun and they actually made money. If anyone has any pictures of that area of Ronnie or my dad please email them to me as my Mom is putting togather a catalog of pics that will be second to none.
