On a low HP engine
should you have the block align honed?

Re: On a low HP engine
Is the block housing bores straight and the correct size ?

Did you take the block apart? How did the bearings look? The crank? Did the crank spin free in the block?

Re: On a low HP engine
aline hone straightens up the thrust bearing area...always a bummer if you find out theres an issue during assembly.

Re: On a low HP engine
I've seen too many variabes in factory mass production machining to say No.
I got to where I just lightly trimmed (.001-.002) the caps and dusted the main bores with the align hone on ever engine I built. It was amazing what I ran into. If it is a SBS or BBC be sure to install the oil pump. When it is torqued it affects the rear main bore. |
Re: On a low HP engine
I would have the machine shop check the main bore sizes with a dial bore gauge and straight edge to see if the block is straight and true. Somehow hen the block is line honed it causes timing chain fitment issues. You can get undersized sets to compensate for that but can be a pain. In all my years of racing I have only had one block line honed. That was after I broke a crankshaft. That block was never right after that. Ended up scrapping it.
