I'm not a GURU
I am no GURU but my personal experience has been that the better pinion placement on the Dana made up for the extra weight. I switched from an 8.75 with a spool to a Dana 60 with a spool (same axles) and the only real change was I quit breaking gears. The car seemed to run exactly the same.

I saw a post from Larry Hill earlier that switching to a Dana did not slow him down, although I assume he was able to maintain the same weight by removing ballast.

Maybe you are saying the same thing but being more subtle :-)
