Ed,
As far as a car culture. Here in the midwest, instead of drag cars. It's 4x4's. Alot of people around here like trucks. Another thing, I work with about a half dozen guys that love derby cars? It amazes me how much money they can tie up into something that they'll destroy eventually. Although, some have figured out ways to put "new" bodies on the things!
I think another thing. You don't have the visability anymore. When I was a pup, 60's-early 70's. Every gas station, repair garage, body shop, towing service, parts store et al, had some kind of race car, be it drag or stock car setting on the lot. One of our "local legends" owned a Sunoco service station, he used to get his dragster out on Friday or Saturday nite and run it up and down the road. The town cops would come out and raise a ruckus, not much they could do. The city and county paid him to keep their police cars tuned up!
I have also seen a new interest with the current crop of Camaro's, Mustang's and Challengers. It is there but has just changed from our day.
