If you haven't already, do a quick Google search on "spread axle trailer", and about the first 5 or 6 results are advantages / disadvantages. It appears that the big advantage is a larger load carrying capability (they're rated for more), but the downside is that they can't turn as tight (and probably have increased tire wear when making tight turns).

From the little bit I read, it wouldn't seem that I would be interested in a spread axle trailer unless I couldn't find a tandem axle trailer to fit my load carrying needs (which seems unlikely to me).

But, maybe somebody with more knowledge / experience can chime in here.
