Maryland International Raceway - September 25th, 2010
Iggie Boicesco clinched his 4th MASGA Championship at MIR on Saturday Evening after closest competitor George Donhauser and Derek Clark lost in the early rounds. Derek and George both had a shot on Sunday to try to gain some more points on Boicesco but, persistent rain made Royce and his Crew have to cancel the race early in the morning.
Derek Clark led the 19 car field in qualifying with an off the trailer 9.901. Following Clark was Pete Luciano (9.904), Wes Weaver (9.906), Rob Keister (9.907) and Boicesco (9.908). In a field mixed with NHRA and IHRA competitors it would be the IHRA Regulars who flexed their muscle in the end with Wes Weaver taking the victory.
Weaver from Orange, Va started from the #3 spot and took down Rice Price in the 1st round, his father Bernard in the 2nd and a red lighting Craig Porter in the 3rd round to earn the bye run into the finals. On the other side of the ladder was Dale Koncen and his 1963 Corvette. Koncen from nearby Chaptico, Md played spoiler for the championship contenders as his took down a red-lighting George Donhauser in the 1st round, MIR Regular Daryl Pinder in the 2nd and dashed the hopes of Clark in the 3rd round before taking down the last remaining NHRA member Tom Goldman in the Semi-Finals.
So the final was set and it would be an all IHRA affair as Weaver took on Koncen. At the hit of the tree Weaver took a huge advantage with a .019 to .055 start. As the 2 cars traveled down track Koncen could not make up the advantage at the start and was forced to run out with a 9.882 to Weavers winning 9.887. So Congrats go out to Wes, Bernard and family on their 1st MASGA Victory.
