Default identifying planetary ratios???

need some help here--Came across a few PG planetaries some long and some shorties----As far as the shorties go is there a sure fire way of identifing the gear ratio if it is not stamped on the end of the shaft??? like counting teeth or some other way???? how many teeth on a gear is there for a given ratio??? when they rework a planetary to change the gear ratios which/what gears are they actually changing???
