I wouldn't worry much about the engine for now. Get a good convertor, better gears (if available) and stiff front shocks for better traction. Low powered cars really benefit from light wheels and tires.
Always pay attention to your MPH. That is your own personal dyno. ET is relative to MPH.
Jeff on the tires there is a problem m/t doesn't make the 20" tall tires anymore.
Another thing is to stiffen the rear suspension as much as possible weight transfer is your enemy.
