Hate to tell you Ed but the end of finding a car on the cheap by an uninformed seller pretty much died with the internet followed by ebay.
I made a lot of money buying and selling muscle cars in the mid-late '80's because I knew where I could find the rust free AZ examples and you could negotiate with somebody for a fair price. I'd then write an ad for Hemmings and wait for a buyer.
Now the deals are much harder to come by because as you stated correctly, everybody has a reference source.
