Your guess is correct, and this is not a big deal. Yes, you can buy them, and might be easier. You can also take one apart, see what is in there, and shim them. You do not want to remove all the travel... most I have seen still have about .020". I would not go any tighter than this, and might actually leave it looser on a street car. If you are very good about checking things often, then maybe run them tight. You still adjust the same as other hydraulic lifters.
