NHRA "introduced" bracket racing at national events back in 1980 when ET division champs from all over the country were invited to Ontario, CA for the World Finals. Tina Gayle was a Miss Winston that year and went on to star in C.H.I.P.S soon afterwards. (Also was a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader at some point.)

The ET World Championship was a one-shot deal until they re-introduced it many years later and have been crowning world bracket champs since then. IHRA has been doing it for a while too as well as having had bracket classes at many national and Nitro Jam events over the years.
