Default Re: Dept Of Trans seminar by IMA last Wed

This is cut and paste on the 2nd page of STARTPOINT video. I encourage you to watch it. Link is in my first post.

General Requirements

It’s important to understand why you would even need to be looking at StartPoint to begin with. The information in the following online guide is essential for you to know if you drive a commercial motor vehicle.

A commercial motor vehicle, or CMV, is any self-propelled or towed motor vehicle used on a highway in interstate and/or intrastate commerce to transport passengers or property.

Okay: translation – you are driving a CMV if it:

Has a gross combination weight rating or a gross vehicle weight of 10,001 lbs. or more; or
Is used to transport more than eight passengers, including the driver, for compensation. In other words, you are driving more than eight people around and getting paid for it; or
Is used to transport more than 15 passengers, including the driver, and is not used to transport passengers for compensation, such as a church bus; or
Is used in transporting material found by the Secretary of Transportation to be hazardous and transported in a quantity that requires a placard.

We know that this is a lot of information to take in. That’s why the following sections of this online guide will cover the basic requirements for drivers, insurance and safety, equipment, and those who are driving oversize/overweight vehicles.
