it works as both ,, depending on how you have the solinode hooked up to your ignition or seperate switch ,,the accusump system has presure and oil stored ,when you hit the switch the stored oil and presure will pressurize the oil pump and galley suppling the engine ,you will see oil presure on you presure gauge before you even crank the engine, if your in a heads race and pulling all the stops out you can get more aggressive on lowering the oil level in the pan , there is a hobbs switch on the solinoide that will activate if presure drops below the presure that the switch is set at (25-50 psi) and will supply the oil pump ,, real good insurance to have ,, you can also have a light tied into it to let you know when and if its triggering during the run gmonde
