Actually, the first year for MX was '75, IIRC. It was always a Modified subclassification and it was originally named "Mini Experimental". The first entries, (at Pomona that year), were two SCCA Toyotas. It was designed as a place for the non-VW four-cylinders so they wouldn't affect the Modified Compact (MC) classes. The NHRA later expanded the parameters to accommodate the V6s which became rampant a few years later.

Originally, the cars weren't permitted tube chassis. That came when "A" was allowed V6 engines and the class pretty much went full-tilt Pro Stock configuration around 1980. Many of you remember Mick Lieferman's white/orange Trans Am MX car; it was originally Ed Dixon's Hardy-built Pro Stocker.

BTW, I don't know why the current announcers call 'em "Modified Experimentals".
