As the guys above said its because of it being an "entry level" class. In div 1 s/st has a pretty good car count at all events. I had heard rumor that NHRA was getting feelers out about having s/st, top dragster and top sportsman nat'l champs this upcoming yr. I haven't heard anything about it lately. I race s/g and s/c but I love the diversity of the cars in s/st. I think that the cost to run the avg s/st car is about inline as s/g. In fact alot of s/st cars are now older retired s/g cars
