Default Re: San Antonio Raceway update

Yeah, it's kinda sad that most of the tracks we use to run are long gone. We ran on 3 Texas tracks that are history--Hallsville, I-20 Raceway in Tyler, and Green Valley Race City. Beginning in the mid '70's, bracket racing kept most of the old tracks going for a few years.

The pic from Tyler shows why the tracks died. The stands are empty. The tracks got all their income from the racers. This can only work with a large car count. In '77 & '78 we went to the Div 4 bracket finals at Green Valley. There were probably at least 400 cars there. It took all day sitting in the staging lanes just to get 2 time trials.

The 1st GV pic shows the crosswalk and the 13 sec bracket Bird TJ(wife) drove. In the 2nd Bird pic it had an original 455 out of a 1970 GTO. It ran 12.40s with a stock 13" converter and 3.55 gears. Yeah, it wuz a low buck operation. But we won a lot of races and had a lot of fun !

There were a lot of big races at Green Valley. It lasted til 1986.
