And I was looking over stocker pictures from Sonoma, and there were a few that clearly had gauges mounted outside the car.

Clearly some are setting the gauges up in front of the windshield. But I'll stick with what Pat told me. Maybe other NHRA tech guys disagree. I don't see it clearly spelled out in the rules anywhere.
