Dear Mr. Cunningham,

I want to thank you for sharing your concerns with me regarding automobile modification. As your representative, I need to know what issues affect you in order to serve you best.

For decades, the Clean Air Act has protected our precious atmosphere and the air we breathe from pollution. The Environmental Protection Agency and the Clean Air Act are instrumental to defending our environment from the effects of air pollution.

Among other things, the Recognizing the Protection of Motorsports Act would exclude select motor vehicles from the EPA’s regulations. Vehicles made and modified for organized racing events would no longer be included in the Clean Air Act’s definition of a “motor vehicle.” American’s affection with the sport of automobile racing goes back to the 19 th century, and has grown exponentially over the years to claim a special place in the heart of many Americans. This legislation opens up a conversation regarding automobile classification, how EPA would implement the proposed changes, and what intended – and unintended – intersections it could have with other federal and state laws. However, Congress must balance our obligation to protect air quality while ensuring that the EPA has the ability to enforce measured and fair environmental standards. Please know that I will continue to work with my colleagues to protect public health and preserve our environment.
