Entry fees way up...

In 1996 when I ran my first national event. You first earned a grade
point. Then ordered entry forms. They would come in the mail. Different
color for each national event. You filled it out, mailed it in. Was kinda
exciting.

Class eliminations used to be much easier to win..

Around the year 2000 you could show up, win class, and recover
a fair amout of in contingency money.

You felt kind of welcome and appreciated.

There was that race in Sonoma...

Like so many things there are usually many reasons...
