I would have thought 5.13 for the short stroke 318 and 4.86 for a 360. But the higher the ratio, the weaker the smaller teeth are. 4.86 worked well for my crate 360. I was wondering at what point weight-wise one would consider going up a step. I'm still working on a Aspen wagon for J at almost 3,800 lbs!
The Dana 60 suggestion is a good one. Weight is hard on 8 3/4's and they're not as easy to check the teeth on.
There was a fast Mirada that ran an 8 1/4" rear for a long time. But I don't know any more details.
