I prefer to source my own components, relays, fuse panels, junctions, wire, cable, etc...and put the system together as I like. Forget finding anything worth using at the typical auto parts stores.

We prefer #2. Just one cable to the starter and nothing is hot unless the starter is engaged. The solenoid can be mounted at the firewall out of harm's way or inside with a pass through or quick connect.

Pay attention to the ground circuit. It's at least as important as the power side.
