Yeah, that's the Mendeola MD. It's based on the VW transaxle, but it uses a 10" ring gear. Probably overkill for a 1,600 pound car with 225 horsepower on 6" slicks. Your buddies are probably running turbo engines with about twice that power, on 8-10" slicks.
Weddle says you have to hack up the car pretty good to get one of those in there.
And they're only available in an IRS configuration, which makes it pretty difficult to use in a swing-axle car.
But according to Weddle, the biggest problem in using the MD in a drag-race application like this, is that the Mendeola MD ring gear is so big, that it cost several inches of ground clearance- when the car squats on launch, it can bang the transmission into the ground.
