Default Re: Mass. vehicle registration

this is from the ct dmv ,, any garage that does emissions should be able to do a vin check

VIN Verifications
Although there may be other specific circumstances that would require a VIN to be verified, VIN verifications are required for vehicles previously registered in another state which do not meet the emissions testing criteria. Vehicles that are currently exempt from emissions testing by newer model year, still require a VIN verification if they are from out of state.
Most emissions test centers can perform VIN verifications; however, there are a number of non-emissions testing locations that can also perform VIN verifications.
Important note: The Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles (CT DMV) will accept the Vehicle Inspection Report (VIR) from an emissions test as a valid VIN verification. Because emissions testing cannot be completed on all vehicles (i.e., motor vehicles outside the 25-year testing window, motorcycles, trailers, off-road vehicles, etc.) the CT DMV requires a separate VIN verification for the registration process.
If an emissions test is required for your vehicle, do not request or obtain a VIN verification; this will be completed when your vehicle is emissions tested. Click here to see a list of vehicles that DO NOT require or are ineligible for emissions testing.
Specific vehicles require VIN verifications to be completed at a DMV Inspection Lane. Click here to see a list of vehicles that MUST be inspected by the CT DMV.
Bring your vehicle along with proof of ownership to a VIN verification station. Click here for more information on proof of ownership documents.
After the VIN is verified, you will receive a verification form (see sample of form) that will be required to register your vehicle at DMV.
The fee for the VIN verification is $10 payable directly to VIN verification station.
If your VIN cannot be verified at the station, you will receive a document that must be brought to a DMV Inspection Lane. Please proceed to a DMV Inspection Lane (see locations and hours) with your vehicle and the document to receive a VIN verification.
