I run old Rancho single-adjustables in the rear with Caltracs. Used to run them full-stiff; now I run them in the middle. Honestly I've never noticed a difference either way. It always works.
I'd think maybe on extension to get the tire planted and then stiffer on compression to keep the tire planted. Generally speaking, you'll use tighter extension on a good track and softer on a bad/hot one.
Painter is dead-on with the settings although my car never went one way or the other. I adjust to get the front end lifting evenly.
