Well, if the SS/AM class is NOT included, I still say that J.B. & John Clegg's SD455 stick cars are the quickest. They've run both the '73 that John bought new, and the '74, that's supposed to be the old H-O car. They restored the '73 a while back to make the '18 US Nats. Don't know if they used the engine out of the '74, or built a new one.

Here again is a link to a race where J.B. ran back-to-back 9.62's, in SS/I trim. Don't know of a reg Pontiac SS car that's gone quicker.

The old '69 RAIV Angeles & McCarthy Bird that Keri still drives, ran high 9's. But, I don't know of another reg SS Pontiac that will get as deep into the 9's as the Cleggs' cars. And, they switched over to GT, with the '69 Bird. So, it's not in the running here.

If there is one, or some, quicker than the Cleggs' SD455 Birds, I'd like to know about 'em.

I just looked thru my pics of currently active SS Pontiacs, and believe it or not, the 350 powered cars of Bill Rink & Mike Morgan are, I think, the next quickest to the Clegg car. I know that don't sound right. I think both cars have been below 10.50. How many other currently active SS Pontiacs do ya'll know that run low 10's or quicker ? I suppose that some of the Pontiac Stockers can actually run quicker than most of the SS Pontiacs. I suppose that Pontiac SS guys with the money to spend have switched over to GT, and many of the others are fairly low buck racers, who are content to just go quick enuff to run the index, in hot weather.

With all the Pontiac stockers that can now run real low 10's, I've often wondered how much quicker they'd be, with SS mods added. For example: Scott Burton's '70 RAIV Bird Stocker ran some 10-teens, & even a 9.98 at a bracket race. So, how much quicker could it be as a big tire, 1st class SS car ? Couldn't you likely gain more than half a sec, with all the SS upgrades ?

Seems to me that Bill Rink gained closer to a sec, when he switched his '74 GTO over to SS. But, I suppose the small cam, low compression engines can gain more, when switching. I'm sure that some of you guys have done it & know how it works.
