That's because the OEM's changed how they rated horsepower starting around '73-'74 to what was termed S.A.E. ratings. The later engines were rated with full exhaust systems, A/C compressor, PS pump, etc. The early engines weren't 'full dressed' for their ratings. Insurance companies and emissions had a lot to do with the decreased ratings, too. -Al
