I use a standard squaring tool to check the gap on the rails, same as a compression ring. I'm not really aware of a way to check the gap on the expander. I check the drag on the oil ring assembly by itself to verify there's not a problem with the expander. The exapander on the Speed Pro SS-50U is what set the tension on those rings, the expander on the Hastings oil ring just holds the rails in place, the rails set the tension.So I don't mess with them.
