Don't you wish, huh? Unfortunately it doesn't work that way. I work for an insurance company and I see people doing stuff that would make your head spin. 50% of the time I alert my higher-ups to something not kosher they will say "Well we've been letting them get away with it for XX years so I don't think we should make waves". The IRS is understaffed at this point and the few auditors I have run into didn't exactly strike fear into my heart. They are more inclined to negotiate than make mandates. Plus I don't think it would make the US Gov't any more money if they took away the non-profit status, the NHRA would just find enough deductions to cover any potential profit. Oh and the downside of taking away their non-profut status....we won't be able to see a copy of their yearly filing as easily as we had in the past. At least the way it is now we have some sort of transparency (not much, but some).
