I have'nt seen this in a while, since the ND's become packing material pretty fast, but I have wondered where some of the greats of before are now. Reason I brought this up, is my brother just ran into Judy Bagwell. Steve's wife, for those it didnt ring a bell with. ( Since I said that, I know there's still a lot of you that knew that.) I went to middle and high school with Steve (Jr) and John, and have not seen either since then. They are in a car business of some sort.
Judy told my brother that big Steve is spending his retirement hunting. I had heard they had moved to Alabama, but have a place in the north Atlanta area again.. Said all were doing good too. Brings back a lot of memories of years ago, hearing and seeing the cars at thier house, and at the tracks. They were baddddd..... Who else comes to mind, and how did you run across them ? Might be fun or at least jog a few memories. Give it a shot.

Kenny! Where have you been?
Back in the day Steve and I were good friends. I have missed his flamboyant self. You know Steve's son was "Buff Bagwell" the WWF wrestler? Judy was part of that also. I would love to see him again. Jim

I have been swamped Jim. I was hating last weekend on one hand and loving it on the other. My wife had her annual "Huge" sale at her antique store. She already had all the mailers already printed and etc, when I put that race on the schedule on the fridge. I tried to do anything so I could go, but my 13 mo old son and I had a great time anyway. We did sit in slow poke and let it idle and him standing in my seat, holding the steering wheel.
I remember Marcus being a tiny little kid, when we were in high school. I did see him on Tv a couple times.

These are special times with you and your boy. I have a picture of me holding my son at a year old right after I had installed a new motor in my SS car. He was standing on a valve cover holding a wench. Now he is 24 and drives a 800 hp street Supra! It seems like only yesterday. Enjoy it while you can my friend, he will be 24 soon. Jim

Had dinner with Steve's old driver Terry Earwood a couple of months ago. He joined us at a test session at Atlanta and made a pass in the Barnett SS/AH car. Believe he said that pass was the fastest he had ever been. He does a little dragracing still. I know he was at the Gators. Terry still works for Skip Barber Racing and since Barber bought the Panoz school at Road Atlanta Terry is in Atlanta in two week trips teaching at Road Atlanta again. Think he's the only person I know who has been a National champ in Dragracing and Roadracing. Think he won the Firestone Firehawk series one year and Indy 73. Could be wrong on that roadracing title. |

Stewart, you might already know, but someone bought, if I heard correctly, the SS/BA car, restored and it it supposedly sold at some big auction for 1.2 M. Judy said it looked exactly like it woulf have in the late 70's, only better !

Kenny:
I posted this under the "events" a couple of weeks ago, as a reminder. There is a reunion each year in October in Henderson, North Carolina where a Large group of east coast racers from the early days of stock/superstock, pro stock, racing get together for a whole week-end. There are alot of the old cars which have been restored and are on display that week-end. The drivers/owners of some of the cars are on hand. To give you and idea names like Herb McCandless, Sam Carroll, Hubert Platt, Max Hurley, Phil Bonner, Tom Sneeden, Jim & Allison Lee, Kenny Warren, etc. There is a big classic car show on Main Street in Henderson along with drag race cars, stock/superstock, pro stock, funny cars and front engine fuel dragster, cars like Sox&Martin, Motown Missile, Hemi Honker, Grumpy Jenkins Monza, Kenny Warren's '70 Challenger funny car, Jim & Allison Lee top fuel dragster and many, many more. There is a Hall of Fame induction on Sunday at the Convention center. Bred Kepner is the MC and the stories that you hear as the inductees accept there awards will bring back memories. I don't know if Steve is familiar with this event and you can pass along the information. He would have a good time. For more information you can go to the website eastcoastdragtimeshalloffame.com |

Jim,
You and Stewart make me even more glad that I bought one of those "Turbo Action" mid-ninetees Div. II video, since Steve Bagwells Savoy & Belvedere were featured in it numerous times! My favorite shot will always be in the qualifying run he had alongside one of those '64 Ford Thunderbolts (SS/C?). While the Ford was reving up it's engine several times, the Savoy was being shown in the right-hand lane mildly rocking as it staged with a cloudy overcast backdrop of skies watching o'er the pair. After a few more revs from the T'bolt, you hear a sudden screech of the slicks on the SS/BAAADDD Savoy and the sound of the "HONKIN HEMI", as it blasted down that quarter-mile at the Southern Nationals to record an e.t. of 9.94!!! I can't think of how many times I rewound that tape to enjoy that car and that run---not to forget the wheelstanding test session that he had with the Savoy earlier in the tape....where you hear the sounds of that "HONKIN' HEMI" just before you see the car eerily looking down the strip as it prepares to make it's burnout! Wow, between Steve's Savoy & his Belvedere (which I remember being driven by Richard Griffin in SS/CA), plus Bob Marshalls "Dodge Material" '65 Dodge Coronet SS/BA car (now I think running SS/AM), to borrow from my memories of the "Archie Bunker Show", "THOSE WERE THE DAYS"!!! I just wish that I could afford one of those cars, because if I could I'd go hunting for Dennis Maurer's '65 Dodge Coronet (also SS/BA, and a former Div. V terror), then I'd have a really fast car to go with my current slow (by other stocker car standards) roller. What fun that would be to see how the other half lives...being the chaser instead of the chasee...that could be fun???

Gary,
I'm a diehard Chevy fan but Bagwell's '64 Plymouth was one of my all time favorite Super Stockers. I loved watching it run especially at Blaney, SC. The track at Blaney was kind of down in a valley and Bagwell or Griffin would stage the car and as the lights came down they would mat the pedal and the car would sound like it stumbled and then the wheels would come up and it would look like a 747 taking off. I sure do miss those days! Bob Rice ![]() |

Did Bagwell have something to do with Roy Clark's Hee Haw Hemi?
