I have a Gen 3 Camaro with a 92 steel hood and the Z-28 hood domes. What is the trick to keep the hood up with out using a wooden broom handle . I'm on my seconded set, they don't last long. Any body out their had this same problem and what was your fix ? What else could be used form another GM hood/car.
Thanks for looking, Ron Miller 92 Camaro GT/DA 3287 Brownstown, Mi |

I've had my 3rd gen for 22 years and have put a fair number of sets on. I just consider it "routine maintenance" now. Seems like none of those type supports are high quality. The newer Jeep ones don't last for crap either.

I have found that if you leave the struts extended, like with the hood up, they last forever. They leak when they are compressed.

If you dont want to keep replacing struts you might want to try Lisle tool #44870. Its a clamp that goes on the strut to help keep the hood open when the struts get weak. I think they are about 10 dollars

Most replacement hood struts from your auto parts stores have a lifetime warranty. Just pop them off and go down and exchange them. Oh yea, keep your reciept unless the store has your phone # like Orielly does.

Owen has a good point because i have had my hood open almost all the time during construction of the car and on dec.10 2008 they turned 9 years old. Happy birthday gas struts! I think they are strong arm brand made by monroe . Kinda like viagra for your hood! (ha-ha) .
