Look back on these 53 factory SS/AMX's. The link is for #42 as I thought it showed an interesting history; D7 Champion, for sale in ND or similar for $2,495 then sitting on a used car lot, found in a barn and now resored. The last few that have sold have been in the $150K range.
At the bottom of the page you'll see the link to the other cars. Interesting history of a very unique car! http://www.ssamx.com/42.htm

What a COOL website!!!
That's a really interesting collection of information about a great race car! Too bad there aren't similar sites put together for the Thunderbolts, '63 Tempest 421 cars, Z-11 '63 Chevys and '62-'68 Plymouth and Dodge S/S cars. The AMX's were very special, coming from a (relatively) small manufacturer, and proved their mettle by virtually dominating their class off and on for so many years; they have staying power!!! Kudos to the people involved in this project. Shirley Shahan's original car is located about 25 miles from where I live, and the owner Bracket races it from time-to-time at a local track... and it still does giant wheelies. Nice to see!!! Thanks for the heads-up, Jeff!!! This is great! Bill

A guy that went to work for my friend Carroll Caudle in Amarillo several years back had one. He moved to Amarillo from Nebraska, if I remember correctly. Wish I could remember his name. Real good guy. It was fast, did the biggest wheel stands, but it ate u-joints like I do cheese burgers.

Nice site Jeff. Those cars grow on you after a while. I race with folks that race them.
My Mustang kind of sticks out like a sore thumb when we all park together!

I just finished looking at all of them and their old / new pictures, whew!
I especially like the pictures at the tracks of 4-5 SS/AMX's all parked together. A friend of mine here in AZ has car #3 and it is freshly restored back to 1970 race day. Now I can understand the few in there which were converted to chevy power. What I can't understand is why the owners of the Lou Downing AMX "Pete's Patriot", a very famous SS/AMX, is still racing but with a dang POWERGLIDE! ![]()

RE: Lou Downing's AMX....
Jeff, that's probably the Nebraska car mentioned in an earlier post, isn't it? I remember watching that car run Div. V points races when it was new, at Omaha, Marion, S.D., and Cedar Falls, IA. It was one of the first S/S'ers I remember doing big wheelies.... every time. It'd be a real shame to put a 2-speed automatic in that car; there ought to be a law.... LOL! Bill

I always thought these were the neatest package cars. I had a friend that crewed on one of these cars, he said the last thing they did was to make sure that both slicks had the same amount of air pressure because they knew the car was going up at the launch and wanted to stay out of the fence.
What a ride! |

I would like to have a conversation with the owner of #6, the George Warren car. If anyone has any contact information available on the current owner please let me know, I drove the car a few times in '69 & '70and know quite a bit about the history of the car.
